It is the one opportunity to show off all the hard work you’ve put in this past year to your family, friends, fellow students, instructors, the community at large and to the licensed, practicing Landscape Architects who serve as show jurors.

Why Should You Participate?
Did we say recognition for all your hard work!  Benefits also include:

What Work Is Eligible?
All work from classes taken Summer 2007 through Spring 2008 is eligible for submission including core curriculum and elective classes.  You may submit two projects but all students are expected to submit at least one.

Attached is a one page entry form.  This form must be submitted by midnight July 8, 2008.  Due to the complexity of the show, display space is not guaranteed for projects submitted past the due date.  The show schedule is as follows:

We encourage students to submit work from “technical” classes and can be done so as a third project submission if from one of the following classes:  Drafting, CAD-- either AutoCAD or PowerCADD, Grading & Drainage, Irrigation, Landscape Construction Drawing I & II, and Landscape Construction Methods & Materials.

Thank you in advance for your enthusiastic participation!  And remember this is your chance to show off the results of all that hard work and sleepless nights!

Regards,

The Student Show Committee

This is a reminder that the Landscape Architecture Program is offering an exciting course this summer on The Japanese Garden: From Tradition to Contemporary Application.

First, let me point out that there is an error in the catalog, in both the hardcopy and online versions.  This class will be held from 7pm to 9pm (not 10pm) with 3 (4-hour) Saturday meetings to take advantage of the daylight and actually spend time in the garden.

Many of you are familiar with the James Irvine Garden at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center in Little Tokyo.  You may recall that the Program held it's Program-wide Design Charette at the JACCC in 2005. The garden is currently undergoing restoration and the new design reflects the current needs of the Center and the evolving dynamics in the local community.

This course is being team taught by Glenn Matsui and Keiji Uesugi, both with a special interest in this effort and who will bring their own perspective to the class.

We are very fortunate to have Dr. Takeo Uesugi, FASLA, as one of our guest lecturers.  Dr. Uesugi is the landscape architect who designed the original gardens in 1979 and is now involved in this re-design.

This is an incredible opportunity to be part of the restoration of this beautiful Los Angeles garden, see first hand the response to new needs, and understand the process.

Hello,

As you heard during winter quarter, I retired from UCLA Extension and the Landscape Architecture Program.  The search for a new Program Director is proceeding, but the position has not been filled…yet.

I have returned on a short term basis to make sure that all continues to go well with the Program.  I will be in the office for 1 or 2 days each week to work on critical events and program development.  I have spoken with a few of you and I appreciate the warm welcomes on my return. I would like to emphasize that UCLA Extension and the Department of the Arts fully supports the Landscape Architecture Program and there should be no concerns about our future during this interim …or after.

Right now, Andrea and I are working on the fall quarter classes, thesis presentations, scholarships, the graduation and awards ceremonies, portfolio reviews, the student show, and the next information session. Please look for emails from the office and the Student Chapter of ASLA that will highlight these events.

You are invited to attend and/or participate in these events (for some of you, participation is required); so, please save the following dates:

I am encouraging you to become active members of the Student Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects at UCLA Extension.  Election of Officers and Representatives (for each year) is currently going on.

Look for the notice requesting student course work to be displayed in the student show. We would like to see work on exhibit that represents all of the courses in all four years…including the technical courses and electives.

I want to emphasize for those students participating in the Portfolio Reviews, we do not want to see work that has been re-worked or modified (copied, enlarged, or reduced) in any way.  We want to see your original work (even with instructor’s marks) with process drawings in a neat and organized format.  After your review, please plan on hanging your work in the student show… you’ll receive directions from the SCASLA Chapter.

The next email will contain information about the Don Marquardt Landscape Architecture Scholarship, a $2,000 award generously donated by our instructor, Don Marquardt.  I will be sending this information to everyone as a blind copy, so even if you are not currently eligible for the scholarship, you’ll know what will be available in the future.

Thank you so much and I look forward to seeing you soon…at one or many of these events!

Please feel free to contact the office with questions regarding anything that is unclear or to discuss the process.  I just realized that I included current 4th year students, who are not eligible…I apologize for sending unwarranted emails… But the other students who are not eligible, should consider taking advantage of this opportunity in the future.

Dear UCLA Community,

Every year, millions of CD, CD-ROM and DVD disks are thrown in the trash.  These disks end up in landfills and incinerators causing unnecessary damage to our environment. Software Central has recently discovered a service that will recycle old CD, CD-ROM and DVD disks.  We would like to help the UCLA campus participate in this service by providing a drop off points for old disks to be recycled.  We have set up a box for this purpose in the Software Central office, 4933 Math Science building.  Drop off hours for disks at this location only are 8am to 4pm, Monday through Friday. Other drop off locations include:

Center for Digital Humanities Lab, B01 LuValle Commons
Center for Digital Humanities Help Desk, 1020 Public Policy Bldg.
CLICC Drop-In Lab, 145 Powell
ETU Office, 3051 Moore Hall
Science Learning Center, 4351 Young Hall
SEAS Computer Lab, 2684 Boelter Hall
Social Sciences Computing Lab, 2035 Public Policy Bldg.
Student Technology Center, Bottom Floor Delta Terrace
Technology and Learning Center, 22-001CHS

We are only able to collect the disks themselves, not the boxes or sleeves that they may come in.  We encourage you to reuse the plastic “jewelbox” cases that the disks come in to the extent possible. Cardboard or paper disk sleeves are generally recyclable as paper products.

Before bringing your disks to any collection box, please ensure that you have erased any sensitive data that they may contain.  You may also shred or break your disks and bring them to us in their shredded or broken form to be recycle
d.

Any type of digital disk can be recycled under this program, including those containing computer programs, music, video, data, etc.  We are able to accept all disks of this type from all UCLA affiliates, including faculty, staff and students.

Please help us spread the word and make this recycling program a success by forwarding this email to anyone that you know on campus that may have disks to recycle. If you would like a disk recycling collection box in your department, contact us for details.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.  Thank you for your assistance with this effort!
